DPP congress poised for conflict over gangster members and Chen Shui-bian's return

Confrontations between rival camps on a range of controversial issues - including reports of infiltration by gangsters and what to do about a disgraced former party chief - are expected at the annual congress of Taiwan's main opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) today.
As well as reports of gangsters joining the party as nominal members and the planned return to the party of former president Chen Shui-bian, now in jail for corruption, a motion by younger members seeking a revision of the party's cross-strait policies is also likely to raise tempers.

Xi Jinping warns officials they'll be held responsible for pollution 'for life'

Government officials will be held responsible "for life" if they approve a project that causes serious pollution, President Xi Jinping said yesterday.
An environmentalist said it was the toughest warning yet linking officials' political future to their stewardship of the environment.
In a Politburo study session on environmental issues, Xi said pollution had become a major concern of the people and China could no longer develop its economy by sacrificing the environment. "The government must create a system of accountability," he said.

Low-key approach to anniversary of death of Xi Jinping's father

Media outlets took a relatively low-key approach yesterday to commemorating the late Xi Zhongxun , a reformist party leader and the father of President Xi Jinping , on the 11th anniversary of his death.
Many news portals ran an article on their home pages featuring a quote in the headline saying Xi Zhongxun had "never made the mistake of being a leftist in his entire life". The article first appeared in China Newsweek for the 10th anniversary of his death.

North Korea pledges return to six-party nuclear talks as envoy meets Xi Jinping

A North Korean envoy made it clear to President Xi Jinping yesterday that Pyongyang is willing to take steps to rejoin long-stalled six-party talks on its nuclear weapons programme, according to mainland media.
Vice-Marshal Choe Ryong-hae, the special envoy of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, also presented Xi with a handwritten letter from Kim at yesterday's meeting in Beijing. Media reports did not say what it said.

Anti-reform Communist Party document attacked by adviser to State Council

A recent Communist Party circular warning officials against Western values appears to have been challenged from inside the political establishment.
Those who have written the circular "consider the people's legitimate calls for reform as activities by hostile forces and 'dissidents', and [are] thus wrongly estimating and analysing the situation", Yang Tianshi, a senior scholar and adviser, wrote in an essay shared online.
